A Drop in the Ocean
Andrew Cooper and Alex Schulze grew up in South Florida, Devoted to the Ocean. Growing up as true watermen, they spent all of their free time surfing, fishing, and even training a dog to catch lobster. As tokens of pride, they wore beach jewelry to represent the oceanic lifestyle. Andrew and Alex both chose Florida Atlantic University for college because of its unique location being only one mile from the ocean, and a short two hour flight to Central America. This allowed them to feed their passion for surfing and diving. To help fund the the lifestyle, they crafted and sold their own beach jewelry, offering a high quality alternative to the cheap plastic trinkets.
Making Waves
As their first business began to grow, so did the need to offer the best product possible. Throughout college, they hunted for an effective way to create authentic, one-of-a-kind pieces, proudly turning down offers to mass-produce their jewelry by machine. After learning that Bali, one of the world’s premier surfing destinations, also boasted a rich carving culture, plans for a new journey were set in motion. While in Bali, Andrew and Alex were lucky enough to meet Dewa, a local artisan and carving expert. Dewa’s entire village makes their livelihood hand carving intricate items such as jewelry and pottery. Intrigued, they purchased some of Dewa's carvings and returned to the United States only to receive an overwhelmingly positive feedback on Dewa’s creations. From that day, they added Dewa's pieces to their collection and started - Devocean Jewelry. Today, Devocean Jewelry is able to employ Dewa and his entire family full-time, giving people all over the world access to genuine pieces of hand carved beach jewelry that are made to last.
